What's the difference?

Does NOT require a permit.

Where can I have one?

Settlement Area or Rural Area only if:

  • At least 6m (20’) from each property lines
  • At least 3m (10’) from any combustible structure or object (building, fence, trees etc.)
  • Must be installed on a non-combustible surface
  • Have a maximum footprint of 24” x 24”


Fire Safety Rules

YES

  • Have a method to extinguish the fire (water, shovel etc.)
  • Supervised by a competent adult at all times
  • Report out of control fires immediately
  • Be respectful of neighbours
  • Burn only clean dried wood or charcoal
  • Burn only if you have a signed permission from building/property owner
  • If wind is less than 15 km/hour

NO

  • No burning during rain or fog
  • No burning of grass, leaves, plastics, wet or painted materials
  • No burning if you do not have permission from building/property owner
  • No burning if the wind is more than 15 km/hour
  • NO BURNING DURING A FIRE BAN

Requires a permit issued by the WNFS for a fee of $10.00

Where can I have one?

Rural Area only if:

  • At least 15m (50’) from buildings for confined fires (a bottom ventilated steel drum covered by a spark arrestor screen will confine a fire)
  • At least 90m (300’) from buildings for open fires
  • Burn less than two cubic meters of material at a time– more than 2 cubic meters, requires site inspection by the Fire Service

  • Have a method to extinguish the fire (3 pails of water, a charged garden hose etc.)
  • Supervised by a competent adult at all times
  • Report out of control fires immediately
  • Be respectful of neighbours and inform them when you plan to burn
  • Burn only clean dried wood (brush)
  • Burn only if you have a signed permission from building/property owner
  • If wind is less than 15 km/hour
  • Allowed to burn only on times specified on the permit (anytime except from April 1st to October 1st burning is only allowed between the hours of 8pm – 8am)

NO

  • No burning during rain or fog

  • NO BURNING DURING A FIRE BAN FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE GUIDELINES STATED ON THE OPEN AIR BURNING PERMIT SHALL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE PERMIT.
